Davout Studios BOXER Upgrade
July 2001
Coastal Acoustics has completed the refurbishment and installation of a BOXER Four system at Studio Davout in Paris. The system, has been installed in the recently completed Control Room Three, a project that has taken Olivier Kowalski, Technical Director, six months to conceive and complete. The cabinets, finished in polished black lacquer, are driven by a set of the much loved EAA Square 1000 high speed bi-polar amplifiers, and the Coastal Acoustics FDS-3 network and cross-over unit, maintaining the system as close to the analogue original as was possible.
Olivier noted; "
having decided to install an SSL console in our new Control Room, we wanted to provide as contemporary a monitor system as possible; we were very fortunate in getting the opportunity of purchasing a BOXER Four system from Funky Junk in London. Neil Grant of Harris, Grant Associates assisted in every phase of the integration of the system, the installation, and alignment, and I am delighted that for the first time ever we have achieved accord amongst all of our house engineers they are delighted with the system balance, regardless of sound pressure level, and pleased with the positive reaction from a large variety of their clients."

These three contracts form part of HGAs impressive portfolio within the superyacht industry. Together with sister companies Coastal Acoustics and Discrete Systems, HGA works closely with designers, architects, owners, captains and yards to provide innovative acoustic design solutions, sophisticated audio-visual installations, custom furniture and integrated systems control aboard new-build and refitted yachts.
Since it was established in 1984, HGA has been involved with the design of many of the worlds most successful TV, film and recording studios and it has now diversified into areas such as home-theatre and cinema projects varying enormously in size, content and complexity. Systems are designed, manufactured, installed and maintained worldwide, with clients ranging from private individuals to large-scale corporations. Examples of other current projects include the acoustic and technical design of an art, music and film facility in Central London and the largest and most sophisticated video and audio post-production facilities in northern Europe for Valkieser. In addition, the companys recently redesigned Web site is now online.
HGA now has three principals: Neil Grant (Managing Director), Carolyn Hayter (Finance Director) and Sheen Uchida (who runs the Tokyo office). In addition, the design group has expanded to include Gavin Sargent, the companys principal Architect.
Neil Grant commented: "Our company has expanded rapidly over the past few years and we are extremely excited about the increased variety and scale of our projects. Our recent expansion of both our headquarters and specialist team is vital for our future development, enabling us to develop our growing interests in areas of programming, research and development associated with our core business. Through this, we can offer our present and future clients an enhanced service incorporating the latest technology and ideas - something we can expand on when we meet everyone on our Stand at the Monaco Yacht Show in September."

Carolyn Hayter, Finance Director - 10 Years at Harris Grant
Feb 2001
My interest in art and design, combined with my qualifications in accountancy and business studies, led to my introduction to the directors of Harris, Grant Associates Limited in December 1990.
The company, incorporated some seven years prior to this first meeting, had already established itself as one of the top acoustic and design practices in the professional audio recording industry, world-wide.
Flushed with the recent success of a number of high profile projects the company had decided to move from its Wembley address to a brand new office located in the heart of the Pinewood Studio complex in Buckinghamshire.
Soon after our first meeting I was offered the position of Financial Controller and commenced work with HGA on February 1st, 1991.
I learned very early on that although HGA was the name that everybody associated with Studio Design and Boxer monitors, its sister company Discrete Systems Limited, played an equally important role producing comprehensive technical documentation and integrating state of the art technical systems within the spaces designed by HGA.
The philosophy underpinning what was later to become the Group of companies was that each separate element of the overall solution would stand on its own.
Each developing and maintaining its own identity within the professional audio industry whilst having the freedom to identify and explore new opportunities relevant to its particular expertise.
The Group of companies consists of:
Harris, Grant Associates Ltd. Acoustic and Design Consultants
Discrete Systems Ltd. Technical Systems Installers
Coastal Acoustics Ltd. Design and Manufacture of BOXER Monitors
Ten years later that same philosophy has been fundamental to our expansion into new and exciting markets whilst maintaining a strong presence in the ever changing music, film and broadcast industries.
At the end of last year, the company bought their own premises in Guildford, Surrey. The building, dating from the 1740s was completely re-furbished and the move completed in the early part of January, 2001. This provides the base for further expansion of the companys growing interests in areas of programming, research, and development, associated with the core business.
